Latest Finds: Thunder Soul and Marwencol

I recently attended the Aspen Film Festival and had the opportunity to see two incredible documentaries, Thunder Soul and Marwencol. I’m not usually a huge documentary fan, but these two are both amazing and shouldn’t be missed.

Fans of funk music will love Thunder Soul, the true story of the Kashmere Stage Band, a high school stage band from Houston that became an international funk sensation in the mid-’70’s, and their extraordinary teacher, Conrad O. Johnson, better known as Prof. Archival footage from the band’s heyday is interspersed with interviews and footage of the band members as they gathered and practiced for a reunion concert in 2009. It’s uplifting, poignant and exhilarating, with some of the best music you’ll ever hear.

In addition, I had a couple of drinks with the director, and he’s a great guy, so you can feel good about spending your money to see Thunder Soul. The only problem is that it doesn’t have a distributor yet, so it may be hard to see. If you know anyone from a major studio, it’d be worth their while to get involved with this film.

Marwencol tells the story of Mark Hogancamp, a former GI who was beaten nearly to death by five teens in his hometown of Kingston, N.Y. After the beating, which left him in a coma for nine days and with no memory of his former life, Mark creates a tiny World War II-era Belgian village called Marwencol in his backyard to help him with his mental and physical therapy. His elaborate fantasy life in Marwencol, played out by dolls and documented through thousands of photographs, virtually takes over his life, until he meets a photographer and a magazine editor who see the fine art potential in his work.

Odd, touching, at times humorous and infinitely fascinating, Marwencol is a must see for anyone with an interest in art, film or humanity in general. In addition, I had a couple of drinks with one of the producers, and he’s a great guy, so you can feel good about spending your money to see the film. Fortunately, Marwencol has a distributor and will be hitting theaters on October 8. Don’t miss it.

Todd, thanks so much for the kind words about “Marwencol!” I’m glad you had such a positive response to Mark’s story. And it was a real pleasure meeting you and Cindy. Also (shameless plug warning) for any of your readers who are interested in the film but who won’t be in the NYC area on October 8, our site has the full schedule of cities and dates for the theatrical release (not to mention a large collection of Mark’s photos). Thanks again!

Being a military guy, the “Marwencol” story intrigues me. Thanks for bringing it to our attention. I watched the trailer…A weirdly fascinating look into a GI’s mind, who was beaten senseless. I’ll have to remember to link this from my sites…

Sarge, you should definitely try to catch both movies. Based on what I know of your musical tastes, you’d love Thunder Soul, too.

Yeah, I didn’t add a comment previously on the Thunder Soul, but I spent a half hour searching the net for information. I found a site, (www.allmusic.com), that let you listen to small clips of all the music they made over the years.

I liked the horns in such things as Burning Spear, Take Five and Super Bad, the drums in Headwiggle, was surprised to hear a rendition of Shaft and really liked the Zero Point and great drums in Don’t Mean a Thing. Have to work this afternoon, but look forward to going back and listening to more.
