GIVE IT TO ME STRAIGHT, DOCTOR. I CAN TAKE IT
by Todd Hartley

Some of you may remember that a couple of weeks ago I went on a rant about how news outlets are constantly reporting conjecture as fact to rile up their bases and increase sales. In that particular case, it was the New York Post basically insinuating that we’ve made contact with aliens, but the problem is rampant media-wide and contributes mightily to the astounding level of stupid in America today.

Here’s the way I see it: If you routinely fall for fake news and start sharing it around on social media and referring to it in your conversations, then you were probably afflicted with stupid to begin with. No amount of real journalism was going to save you. Read the rest of this entry →

THE 4,900 PERCENT HUMAN MEDICAL MARKUP
by Todd Hartley

Todd Hartley-smallMy little girl had surgery a couple of Tuesdays ago. Pretty major surgery, too. Over the past year or so, she’d developed a large lump near the base of her spine. Doctors did a biopsy and determined that it was cancerous, so the other week, they performed an operation to remove the tumor.

Our doctor said it was locally invasive but unlikely to spread to the rest of the body too quickly if we wanted to wait, but we were sure; we wanted that thing out of there right away. So the doctor recommended a new procedure that involved making a large incision and removing most of the tumor (“shelling it out,” as he said) and then placing chemotherapy beads under the skin to fight the remaining cancerous tissue.  Read the rest of this entry →

START ACTUALLY PROMOTING THE GENERAL WELFARE
by Todd Hartley

Todd Hartley-smallI read an article recently about how virtually every Southern state has decided not to participate in the Obamacare plan to expand Medicaid, and I found it a little curious. To me, it seemed like a case of cutting off noses to spite poor people’s faces, but to be honest, I really don’t know much about the program.

I don’t think I’m a big fan of Obamacare, but it’s hard to know for sure. I’ve tried to read up on it, figuring if I was informed I could make an educated decision on whether it’s a good thing or a bad thing. Read the rest of this entry →

INOCULATING OURSELVES AGAINST POINTLESS VACCINES
by Todd Hartley

OK, before we get started with this week’s column, I have a very important disclaimer: I am not a doctor – not even close. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, I’ve never even stayed at a Holiday Inn Express. I’m really just an idiot who spouts off about things each week because people allow me to. So keep in mind as you read this that I have absolutely no idea what I’m talking about.

That being said, when I’m not pulling in money hand over fist as a humor columnist, I do a lot of medical writing for a children’s health website. Read the rest of this entry →

LET’S ALL JUST STOP BEING SUCH WHIMPERING BRATS
by Todd Hartley

Sometimes, in the course of human events, it becomes necessary to shut the hell up, stop occupying everywhere and tea partying everything, stop waving our guns and religion and crying about who gets taxed what, stop blaming terrorists, politicians, climate change, bankers, socialists  and everyone who doesn’t agree with us for all our problems and take a good long look at ourselves and the way we live.

Everyone’s been crying poverty for the last three years, but let’s see how broke we really are. Read the rest of this entry →

Sick nearly to death of Obamacare

I swore to myself I wasn’t going to do it, but I have nothing else to write about this week, so now that Obama’s health care plan seems like it’s practically a done deal, I feel it’s time to weigh in with my two cents’ worth. And for those of you who know me, you might be a little surprised at what I think of Obamacare.

I hate it. Oh, I’m not buying into the conservative argument about, “Who’s going to pay for this?” and all that nonsense. Realistically, I don’t know how much it costs and what changes it will bring, and to be frank, I don’t really care that much. Read the rest of this entry →
