I’m With Stupid – November 9, 2012

Dear Mr. Romney,

My condolences on your loss. I can’t say I’m sorry you didn’t win because I didn’t vote for you, but you seem like a nice person (most Mormons are, in my experience), and it must be hard to lose something on which you’ve worked so tirelessly for the last five-plus years. My hockey team lost a game in overtime a couple of weeks ago, and it was no fun at all, but that only took up about an hour of my life. I can only imagine how tough it must be to lose a presidential election after all that time, money and effort. Read the rest of this entry →

Did you hear about the billionaire CEO who threatened to fire some of his employees if Obama wins the election?

What a douche bag. Is this seriously what it’s come to in America? We’ve become a friggin’ oligarchy, with money-grubbing timeshare developers, casino magnates and oilmen trying to call the shots so they can keep stuffing their ludicrously deep pockets. Read the rest of this entry →

I’m With Stupid – September 14, 2012

I just got off the phone with my mother, who has become a staunch conservative as she’s aged, and I asked her when she thought America was at its best in her lifetime. She was just about to tell me when she was called away and had to hang up.

Given her political bent, I would guess the Reagan era, but who knows? She might have gone for Eisenhower. She seems to look back on her teens fondly enough. Read the rest of this entry →

I don’t know a whole lot about advertising. That may seem kind of pathetic considering I made all the ads for a real estate company for a few years, but that was pretty basic stuff: slap a picture of a house on the page, make up some nonsense about granite countertops and an open floor plan, and ship the ad off to whichever publication it was running in. As far as real advertising goes, though, I don’t have much of a clue. Read the rest of this entry →

Sick nearly to death of Obamacare

I swore to myself I wasn’t going to do it, but I have nothing else to write about this week, so now that Obama’s health care plan seems like it’s practically a done deal, I feel it’s time to weigh in with my two cents’ worth. And for those of you who know me, you might be a little surprised at what I think of Obamacare.

I hate it. Oh, I’m not buying into the conservative argument about, “Who’s going to pay for this?” and all that nonsense. Realistically, I don’t know how much it costs and what changes it will bring, and to be frank, I don’t really care that much. Read the rest of this entry →

A swift and merciless ‘unpunishment' for West

As a 39-year-old white guy with a country-club upbringing and no rhythm, I am, understandably, not a huge fan of rap music. This wasn’t always the case, mind you. Once upon a time I was deeply into Public Enemy and A Tribe Called Quest and, yes, even gangsta rappers like NWA and Eazy-E. But that was when I was young and hip — well, less unhip, anyway — and since then I’ve gotten a lot older and rap’s gotten a lot worse. By now I can’t even listen to the stuff.

So believe me when I say I wouldn’t know a Kanye West song if I heard one. Read the rest of this entry →

Beware of the dreaded tuba testes

I was watching the inauguration of Barack Obama as president of the United States last week, and during the part where French-born Chinese cellist Yo Yo Ma, Israeli violinist Itzhak Perlman and Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero performed a piece by composer John Williams, I couldn’t help but wonder what clarinetist Anthony McGill, an actual American, was doing as part of the quartet.

But then I realized that with an Asian man, a Jewish man and a Latina woman already on stage to perform a white man’s music, the only racially harmonious choice left was a black man or a black woman, Read the rest of this entry →

Addressing the really important issues

The headline on Yahoo.com told me just about all I needed to know: “All eyes on Michelle’s dress.”

Here we are, having just made history by electing an African-American as president of the United States, and Yahoo was trying to tell us that what was really important was the dress Michelle Obama was wearing as her husband gave his victory speech in Chicago.

Is it just me, or does that seem a little ridiculous? Read the rest of this entry →

Join hands and sing Kumbaya

Great news, people; just a few more days, and the presidential campaigns will finally be over! Regardless of who wins, I think we can all be thankful for that.

Is there anything positive to be said about a process that takes an American hero like John McCain and, through an endless series of increasingly bitter and negative attacks on his opponent, strips him of his dignity and integrity? Or that paints a decent and dedicated public servant like Barack Obama as some sort of radical socialist and terrorist-by-association? Read the rest of this entry →

A plan for America’s stupid youth

I just got done watching the final presidential debate, and I’m glad they finally talked about some different issues, like nominating Supreme Court justices and reforming health care. I was getting really tired of hearing both candidates give non-answers when asked what they would do about the economic crisis, because, to be honest, I don’t think anyone knows what to do about the economy right now.

Unfortunately, both Barack Obama and John McCain spent essentially the entire debate giving more non-answers to every question lobbed their way, Read the rest of this entry →
